8. Try – includes chords to try experiences and activities that are new and/or uncomfortable in a safe environment. Many people skip this step when they work with groups, whether in a short-term event or in a long-term environment such as a classroom. However, it is a large part of prevention that can help succeed in a group experience. There are many ways to enter into group agreements that allow each member to participate in the group environment and results. As a bonus, it helps leaders and moderators cope with all the difficult behaviors that emerge. That is why I would like to give four simple tips for establishing group agreements at the first meeting. This is not an exhaustive list, but a guide to get you started in the development of your normative and confident group environment. Who is responsible for implementing these things if someone does not respect the agreement? Follow these chords and post them in a visible part of your space. We will share some examples we have used or seen in the past. Finally, you must seek agreement on all points of the whole group. For groups working together over a long period of time, it may be worth spending a little more time developing a longer-term group agreement. You can use a process like the one described below.

Although the time of a group agreement sometimes seems a little frustrating, you gain that time later. This makes your event much more fluid. Second, it is important to develop a list of agreements with your group rather than participating in pre-formed agreements that you have not developed. It is quite normal to have an idea of what the agreements want to include, but they should be general (respect, no violence, a microphone, etc.) to make room for young people. If you strengthen youth by allowing them to develop agreements, they will take on more responsibility and exercise them more closely. Some of the common agreements I talk about with young people are: you can add others, for example.B no phones during the group or no swearing-in depending on our context. Just think about coming up with a casual phrase of ideas and getting to a few with the kids in the group. While agreements must be generated by the participants themselves, the 11 common elements that promote a safe group environment are described below. If the group does not respond to these elements alone, this list can be used as a call for debate during the development process. Some might consider a group agreement, «the rules.» The main difference between a group agreement and «rules» is creation and application. Creating a youth group contract takes time and discussion.

It takes the ownership and participation of all young people to work well. They are also part of the group and can therefore ensure that all zero tolerance elements end up in the list. But again, do it in conversation. For example, with a non-alcoholic «rule,» explore why it is important for young people to come sober. The aim of such a treaty is to define and agree on a specific code of conduct that each member of the group believes is ready to adopt. This should be based on proposals from the group as a whole, with contributions from the director. The agreement should allow each member to thrive in the group environment, while they can count on others to do the same. They must also have a number of sanctions to get children to comply with the agreement, see below for a few examples. If you have the luxury, it is best to represent these agreements at your first group meeting. I know for some of you in the classroom that time may have already passed and in such cases it is normal to enter into attendance agreements later in the school year, just expect some resistance (see the article on resistance that is coming soon!).
