Third Withdrawal Agreement Vote
In response to the vote, European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted: «Faced with the rejection of the Withdrawal Agreement by the House of Commons, I have decided to convene a European Council on 10 April.» After the historic vote, President Sassoli said: «I am deeply saddened to think that we are at this point. Fifty years of integration are not so easy to dissolve. We will all have to work hard to establish a new relationship that always focuses on the interests and protection of citizens` rights. It will not be easy. There will be difficult situations that will test our future relationship. We knew this since the beginning of Brexit. But I am sure that we will be differentiated and that we will always find commonalities. The bill has passed its report phase and third reading. On Wednesday 22 January 1, 2020, the bill returned from the Lords to the House of Commons with five amendments. These were all rejected.
On 23rd October the House of Commons debated three technical provisions relating to the withdrawal of the United Kingdom from the EU. The legislative debate focused on the repeal of certain technical provisions in UK eu law. If the vote in favour of these three laws were passed, they would only come into force if the UK finally left the EU. By voting only on the withdrawal agreement, the government had hoped to get a brief delay in Brexit and avoid Britain`s participation in the European elections in May. Immediately afterwards, opposition leader Jeremy Corbyn called for a vote of no confidence in the government, which took place on 16 January 2019. .
